Day 14: AMC Monsterfest...

Unlike Christmas, for most people Halloween is much more of a "drunken party" thing than a "gather 'round the TV" thing, which is why stations don't devote a great deal of attention to airing Halloween programming. That’s a shame. Several stations try, and I’ll be looking at what they’ll be broadcasting this holiday season.

AMC will begin their 11th annual Monsterfest on Sunday, October 21. AMC used to air Monsterfest the entire month of October, but put an end to that practice a few years ago. I liked it back then, for if there was never anything on TV worth watching, you could always see a horror movie on AMC.

The event usually features more than 40 films, spanning seven decades – from classic Universal titles like Frankenstein, The Mummy, Dracula, that launched the genre in the ‘30s to more modern movies like Fright Night and Halloween 1-5.

What I always liked about Monsterfest is that AMC would air a wide variety of films. They’d air classic black and white films, then follow it up with a newer, scarier movie, and then throw in a few movies you’ve never heard of like Jesse James Meets Frankenstein’s Daughter. It was the best of everything.

However, some of their choices just left me scratching my head. This year, Monsterfest has eliminated the black and white classics and has also cut out some of the cheese…but it still looks pretty solid this year.

AMC Monsterfest 2007 will include:

The Birds, Psycho, The Curse of the Living, Creepshow, Children of the Corn, Children of the Corn II: The Final Sacrifice, Poltergeist II: The Other Side, Scream 3, Wes Craven Presents: Dracula 2000, Jack the Ripper, The Howling, The Fog, The Frighteners, The Brain, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Hellraiser, Pet Sematary, The Frighteners, Halloween, Blood of Dracula, Pet Sematary Two, Halloween 4: The Return of Michael, PiƱata: Survival, Gothika, and The Curse of the Living Corpse.
